Sharp Corporation (シャープ株式会社 Shāpu Kabushiki-gaisha?) (TYO: 6753, LuxSE: SRP) is a Japanese electronics manufacturer, founded in September 1912. It takes its name from one of its founder's first inventions, the Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil, which was invented by Tokuji Hayakawa (早川 徳次) in 1915. Since then it has developed into one of the leading electronics companies in the world. As a semiconductor maker, Sharp is among the Worldwide Top 20 Semiconductor Sales Leaders and among the Top 100 R&D Spenders in a list published by IEEE Spectrum magazine. It gained public awareness in the United Kingdom when it sponsored Manchester United F.C. from 1982 to 2000, which was a great period of success for the club. Known for their AQUOS design, Sharp LCD televisions come in 16:9 widescreen and standard 4:3 aspect ratio. Their sizes range from 13" to 45". The AQUOS G-series televisions are available in rear projection, flat panel, and wireless. Depending whether or not you choose a table stand or not, model thickness will range between 4-14" thick. Many models come with a digital cable ready slot.

2008/2009 Sharp Models

Sharp Aquos D65U Series

For 2008/2009 Sharp adds the Aquos D65U and D85U series lcd televisions to their product line. The 1080p, enrgy star compliant LC-52D65U, LC-46D65U and LC-42D65U feature a new power saving mode which actively adjusts the brightness and contrast to use less energy while the TV is in use. The full HD resolution panels come equipped with Sharp's Aquos Advanced Super View Black TFT panel. The Spectral Contrast Engine gives the units high dynamic contrast and a 6ms response time keep motion lag to a minimum.

Sharp Aquos D85U Series

Stepping up from the D65U Aquos line the LC-52D85U, LC-46D85U and LC-42D85U feature the same 1080p Advanced Super View Black TFT panel but with a 120hz refresh rate to help even more with eliminating motion lag. Aquos Link allows simple control of compatible devices and HDMI 1.3 inputs allow for enhanced color and audio. 5 of these HDMI inputs mean you'll never run out of space for all your electronics and the unit retains it's energy star rating and power saving features from the D65U Aquos line.

Sharp Aquos SE94U Series

Sharp's flagship line for 2008/2009 is the SE94U series. The "SE" stands for Special Edition and these lcd telvesions pack the features to back that up. The LC-52SE94U, LC-46SE94U and the massive LC-65SE94U have the 120Hz Advanced Super View Black TFT panel as the D85U but add Sharp's 5 wavelength back light which further improves contrast and color reproduction. Aquos Link, HDMI 1.3, Detachable speakers and PC inputs round out the feature set of this high end line of Aquos Televisions.

Sharp Aquos XS Series

The ultra thin Aquos XS series televisions were announed this year. Featuring a next generation MegaASV panel, the pixels and backlighting are precisely controlled to give excellent contrast and color to the picture. The 52 inch LC-52XS1U-S and 65 inch LC-65XS1U-S use tri color LED lighting which can darken specific areas to produce black levels previously unheard of in an LCD and repositioning the components has allowed for a 25% thinner television.

Sharp Aquos SB Series

Sharp's entry level into their Aquos line is the SB series of lcd televisions. It's not often you find an entry level tv with 1080p resolution but the LC-46SB54U has it. Built in ATSC, QAM and NTSC tuners, a 6ms response time and a wide viewing angle are some of the other features of the SB line up.

Sharp Aquos BD80U Series

The first feature that stands out with the new Aquos BD80U series from Sharp is the built in Blu Ray player. Smaller sized TVs are no stranger to a built in DVD player but these Sharp LCDs go up to 52 inch. We weren't provided any features of the built in Blu Ray other than the fact that it is there but that alone should make anyone happy who wants to mount a TV somewhere where they can't fit outboard components.

Sharp Aquos E67U Series

Sharp's Aquos E67U series brings two smaller LCDs for anyone who doesn't want the built in Blu Ray player that's in the BD80U series. The 1080p panel that uses Sharp's Advanced Super View anti-reflective coating. There is no 120Hz refesh rate in these two LCDs but they do feature 4 HDMI inputs, two component inputs, Energy Star 3.0 compliance and Sharp's Vyper Drive gaming mode.

Sharp Aquos E77U Series

Stepping up from the E67U, the E77U features the same 1080p reolution, Advanced Super View anti-reflective panel, Vyper Drive Gaming Mode and Energy Star 3.0 compliance that the E67U series includes. The added features are Sharp's Fine Motion 120Hz processing, a 4ms response time and an additional HDMI input to bring the total to 5.
